Reinforced Concrete structure, 2 stories above ground
This is a new construction project to build an animal breeding facility on the campus surrounded by plentiful nature, including an old growth forest.
Since windows cannot be installed due to the rearing conditions, the building volume with a closed and negative impression disturbs the natural beauty. In addition, the air-conditioning load is tremendous, as temperature and humidity control is necessary 24/7.
In an attempt to achieving a "voluminous building nestled in the nature (campus)," the design tries to establish a gentle relationship with the surroundings by forming the building outline with particles, in the same way groups of leaves (particles) form the outlines of trees.
For that, wood cores (scrap pieces of wood), which had no applicable usages in wood distribution, are finely chopped and piled as particles that wrap around the exterior wall. This new exterior design not only insulates the building and reduces solar radiation load, but also contributes to low carbonization by utilizing waste materials. The design details that allow the replacement of wood particles, in case of decaying, provide the opportunity for continuous user involvement in the architecture.
With the wood particle layers, the facility blends in with nature, society, and the environment as a green building in a new domain.
