This is an engineering facility complete with laboratories designed as part of the new campus plan for the transfer of Kyushu University from urban Fukuoka to the Itoshima Peninsula. While maintaining strict observance of the "Kyushu University New Campus Master Plan 2001" and the "Kyushu University - Basic Design of Engineering Zone" (both by Kyushu University), the design process took up the principles of both these plans and worked toward their further development.
Variations in the exterior walls are achieved through the segments and the shapes of windows and doors for each wall span in order to create a human-scale feel to the large-scale buildings. Internal public areas have been established to introduce some character along the undulating exterior levels and create spaces that are at one with the verdant landscape. In addition, careful consideration has been given to sustainable design, from zoning plans with guaranteed flexibility to IT environment construction, in order to accommodate changes in the future.
