In relation to nanotechnologies, which the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) has designated priority fields in their basic plan for next generation scientific technologies, this laboratory was developed to focus RIKEN's full potential and serve as the core site in which researchers from many fields and many organizations could come together to implement RIKEN's nanotechnology project.
The biggest goal is to improve research results, and the facility is designed to create a synergistic effect by combining a high specification laboratory environment to support cutting edge research with a "human" space in which researchers can associate in comfort. The "Gakusai (Interdisciplinary) Lobby", created for the purpose of improving research results through the exchange of information from different fields, is located at the center of the individual research laboratories. The aim is to create a space that can accommodate various levels of research activities ranging from individual research to group research.
