Other than functioning as a research facility, this building also houses information exchange facilities for joint R&D activities with domestic and international researchers and is designed to serve as a core NTT R&D facility creating diverse multi-media services for the 21st century. The two themes "Sustainable design" and "Creating rich inter-communication spaces" were adopted for the design of this building, encompassing the building itself, office planning and maintenance/management. The research rooms have been placed in the north of the building and the southern wall has small windows fitted with double skin sashes to reduce thermal load (PAL value 276/m2 year). The wood from the Cherry blossom trees on the site that had to be felled was re-used in a number of ways, all the doorknobs of the research rooms are made from this wood, and due consideration has been given to conservation. The green ratio of the site has been maintained through the introduction of green borders along the periphery and a front garden that blends with the building.
