The world' first: UL certification for socket-outlet and plug for 10A 400V class DC distribution system

NTT FACILITIES, INC. (Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Kiyoshi Tsutsui) and Fujitsu Component Limited (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, President: Koichi Ishizaka) obtained UL(Note1) certification for its first of a kind socket-outlet and plug for 10A 400V class DC distribution system.
The DC distribution system (voltage level around 400 V d.c. in ICT or similar application) eliminates energy loss by DC-AC conversion and realizes highly efficient electricity distribution. In cooperation with NTT group, we embarked early on its research and development before the rest of the world.
The DC distribution system is expected to contribute to electricity-savings and reduction of environmental load in the growing ICT field, such as transmission facilities and/or data centers. The DC distribution system has been required to ensure safe operation such as the prevention of arc discharge which occurs by current interruption and electric shock. To meet these requirements, NTT FACILITIES and Fujitsu Component jointly developed a socket-outlet and plug for 400V class DC distribution system. It has been mainly adopted in datacenters in Japan since NTT FACILITIES' promotion starting in November 2010.
The socket-outlet and plug features following multi-tier safety constructions:
- Embedded arc extinguishing magnet assisted module breaks arc discharge in a short time
- Control make/break by mechanical slide switch which also prevents withdrawal of plug by mistake
- Using flame-retardant safety agency materials
With these safety functions recognized, the socket-outlet and plug for 400V class DC distribution system obtained certification of the safety standard UL 2695 (note2) for the first time in the world.
With this UL listing, further introductions of 400V class DC distribution systems are expected in North America and other counties. In Japan, this socket-outlet and plug won the 59th Shibusawa Award for its high safety and introduction in datacenters.
To encourage the dissemination of this environmental friendly system, we are working for IEC international standardization, and will work for European safety standards in the next phase. We continue development and supply of safe products for DC distribution system and contribute to a sustainable environment and society.
Note1: UL is an independent safety science organization established in 1894 in U.S., dedicated to the public safety. With the core of development of various products' standards and provision of tests and authentications for those standards, they contribute for ensuring safety. UL mark is adopted by many states and autonomies in U.S. and consumers recognize it as a sign of trust and high quality.
Note2: UL 2695 is titled DC RATED ATTACHMENT PLUGS AND OUTLET DEVICES INTENDED FOR USE WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND TELECOMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN RESTRICTED ACCESS LOCATIONS, covering required specifications for socket-outlet and plug for DC distribution system.
